Summer Fun

A lot has happened this year or not happened, given the extreme set of Covid restrictions we are all living under. In Western Australia, the border closures have largely kept the community safe, although still at risk with little immunity.

In the Alpaca world, most shows in WA for this year were cancelled, the cria drop at Silverwood, didn't eventuate - perhaps my Alpacas thought better of bringing their young into this crazy world.

However, sales of wethers have been active and we have now sold out.

The most recent departures were Jaxon who has gone off to a rescue farm in Margaret River to join a menagerie of other animals and Prince who was delivered yesterday to a bush caravan park on the coast to join Ernie, whose Alpaca mate had recently passed away at the age of 18+.. It was lovely to see them meet each other and begin to bond - one a Suri, the other a Huacaya.

Our last two wethers will be leaving us in November. Each departure is a wrench, but I have to remind myself, we cannot keep expanding the herd,

The good news recently was some feedback from the new owner of Charlie and Choco. Those two went off to Kalgan River earlier this year to guard a small flock of ewes, who were about to lamb - not one stock loss to foxes, which had been a real problem the previous year. Charlie and Choco have apparently bonded really well with the mob and it's always reassuring to hear of their success in protecting the new lambs.

We do have a few more affordable females from the breeding herd, who we have retired from breeding, but still have several years of life ahead and would make excellent paddock mowers or herd guards.

In our quest to reduce and consolidate the herd, some younger females, both black and white, are also available for sale. Perhaps it's time to start your own breeding herd?

We can do a package deal - 2 for 1 plus a free mating - one younger female with a free mating and one older female. The perfect starter pack!

And we have 4 stud males, all Suri ( 3 black, 1 white) and we might reluctantly part with one of those.

All are available for matings - they look forward to that!

Summer has arrived though and the odd fly is already buzzing around. Shearing begins in November and our new float should arrive by then and we can then transport our Alpacas in significant splendour.

So although it has been a relatively quiet year, it has given us time for quiet reflection and forward planning. Watch this space!
