About us
Silver Karri started with 3 Suri Alpacas in 2009, then carefully chose
and bought another 3 to form the nucleus of an exclusively Suri herd.
The resulting herd today is a mix of black, white and some coloured
animals bred from selected stud male and female pairs.
The finest matching pairs are then put together for
optimum results in fleece, conformity, and character.

Alpacas
There are two sub species generally found in Australia -
Huacaya and Suri.

They are similar in physical appearance, behavioural
characteristics, and management requirements, but Suri alpacas,
particularly when young, have much longer fleece which hangs in
tresses and give the animals a very distinctive look, and a flowing grace
to their movements.
Alpacas are uniquely easy to manage, and extraordinarily light on the
environment. They move together as a herd, browse and graze
selectively and lightly, defecate only in selected places, never graze over
those locations and do not challenge fences. These habits ensure alpacas
generally do not pick up parasites from their own faeces, and make the
harvesting of their manure a very easy task.

our animals
Females born into the herd are sometimes paired with one of our own
stud males, or with a stud male from another breeder to secure a better
blood line, and some improved diversity in our own herd.
We generally offer females for sale when pregnant, or sometimes with cria at foot.
Males born into the herd that have the best qualities of fleece, colour
and physical appearance are reserved for use as stud animals for our
own and other herds.
Less suitable males are wethered and, when mature, offered for sale as herd guards to farmers stocking sheep, or indeed any livestock susceptible to predators (eagles, foxes, dogs etc).
Alpacas are also useful “lawnmowers” in small holdings

In summary, we offer

Breeding females
Stud males for sale or service
Wethered males as stock guards
Both male and female animals as an ideal small holding animal for
easy pasture management.
Fleeces for Spinning
Yarn

In general, our animals are only sold in pairs, or individually if joining other
alpacas or an established herd of animals such as sheep.
They are very social herd animals, and whilst they readily bond with sheep, and will protect them, to place them on their own is unkind, and will adversely affect their
demeanour.
