It's been a catch up time here at Silver Karri.
Long summer days, dry paddocks and the odd and welcome sprinkling of rain to keep the fire risk down. Surrounded by majestic Karri trees, one branch fell overnight, smashing a fence which now needs major repair. Fortunately no animals were in that paddock at the time. Alpacas seem to have an instinct for danger as earlier in the day they simply refused to come up to the shelter for feed. I had no idea why at the time, but the branch was not far from the shelter.
We're about to begin mating for next year's drop, so selecting the right studs for the right females is not an easy science. Our matings from 2019 should drop around May. It's always exciting to see what we get, males, females, colours, fleece. Young cria are such a delight.
Since attending a fleece sale workshop in Perth, we now have the task of sorting our stockpile of fleeces into the 100kg bales required by the buyers. It will be good to reduce the stockpile!
In the meantime, some of our wethers have gone to new homes, two to entertain guests at some holiday cottages nearby and another couple will be joining some sheep at a major local winery. One of my favourite breeding girls is going shortly too. So sad, but the price of being a primary producer, is one has to buy, produce and sell!
Hopefully , my next blog will be to report on the cria drop in May!
